70's Inspired

This is the first home I started work on.  I don’t know if it’s really a 70′s home.  It has modern elements, but something about it hearkens me back to that decade.

The Austere

This is the second home I started.  I was really struck by this image from Luxhomes.  It’s deceptively simple looking at first sight, but to actually implement it in the Sims has been the most difficult task of the 3 WIPs so far.  The entire bottom level is left to my imagination as well, just for an added challenge.  However, I’m extremely fond of moderns, so I really enjoy working on this one.

Fairfax Mansion

For this WIP, I was looking for a more classic, traditional home to build, and I like that this one has a touch of faded glory.  I also really like its intricate architecture.  It’s a challenge but not a ridiculously difficult one the way some of the more elaborate mansions tend to be.

I am currently working on the exteriors of all 3 homes, so still in the early stages of building with landscaping and interiors yet to be done.  As I’ve mentioned before, with two little children, I’m just not able to move along as quickly on these as I might like.  But I promise, they will get done – not sure which one first, but all 3 eventually!

So, which home(s) appeal to you?

I love how the trees are integrated into the structure such that they support it while still allowing for preservation and growth of the trees.  I like the way the first home blends into the trees, but I also was taken by the way the two units were connected by a hanging bridge in the second image.  Thus, I decided to incorporate both ideas in my build.  I also wanted to do something special with the landscaping, so I designed a large, multi-level waterfall that flows directly into a natural pool.  Your sim can swim under and behind the waterfall!  Water trickles out from the pool into a small, meandering stream and pond.  Nearby, there is an open outdoor bathroom and a firepit.  Sims can enjoy the spectacular view from large bay windows inside the home or either of its two balconies.

The treehouse resides on a 50×50 lot and costs ~130K furnished/~76K unfurnished.  The main structure contains a large living area and small, half bath on the first level and kitchen and dining on the second level.  Two separate structures are designated as a master bedroom and kids’ room, respectively, and are connected to the main home via hanging walkways.  The interior is decorated in a warm, autumnal, log cabin style with a bit of a deviation toward the realm of the romantic in the master bedroom.  No custom content was used in this build (not even patterns this time!), but some expansions and stuff packs are required, depending upon which version of the home you choose.  Store items were also used.  Further details and download links are at the bottom of this post.  Let the picture spam commence!

I really liked the juxtaposition of the stark, modern structure with what looked to be a lush, even overgrown yard with a lot of deep green color to it.  I tried to match the front exterior as closely as possible, but beyond that, I had no house plan or other images to go by, so the rest springs from my own imagination.  It’s taken me months to complete it (being the mother of two very young children necessitates that almost any project takes months!), but I’m pleased with the results.

I wanted to challenge myself to do a few new things time around.  First, I wanted to try to complete a fully furnished lot without using custom content (except patterns).  That was probably a good decision given what happened with the Pets expansion!  I also wanted to do something inventive with the pool and jacuzzi.  I love water features, and while I’m grateful for all the prebuilt fountains EA has given us as well as the new fountain tools, I want to be able to connect one body of water to another more creatively.  I’m really excited with what I was able to achieve with this home’s water feature, and I hope to do more like it in future builds.

I created some floor tiles for this build that may be of interest to other builders/decorators.  I saw this image:

I really liked the effect of the grass between paving stones, and I wanted to see if I could duplicate it for my gardens:

I think the tiles pretty closely approximate what I wanted.  You can easily match most grass terrains by simply adjusting the two colors used in the green pattern.  Besides creating a path, you can also use some of the others I made to highlight interesting spots in your garden:

The Breezeway is situated on a 30×30 lot.  It has 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, an office, open concept living/dining/kitchen, a den, and a home salon.  I really wanted to play with the beach theme, so I used a lot of nautical content.  Like my last offering, The Family Retreat, I designed this home for myself, but I hope it may also appeal to someone else.

The Family Retreat is situated on a 60×60 lot.  It has 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 offices, living room, den, kitchen, dining room, dance floor, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, library/music room, game room, and an inner courtyard with a pool, outdoor cooking and dining, and a big backyard with a playground and plenty of other outdoor entertainment.  It also includes two attached garages.  I really designed this one entirely for myself, so I don’t expect anyone else to necessarily want it, but I’m proud of some of the design work, especially some of the interior design, and would like to show it off a bit.

I know, it’s a ton of content, but again, I was designing for myself.  I’ve got one more home that I’m currently working on, and after that, I’m probably done from a creative perspective for a while.  I want to spend more time actually playing the game – there are still careers from Ambitions that I haven’t tried yet and lots of Late Night content, not to mention the upcoming Generations EP.  Also, I’m due to give birth to my second child in early June, and I doubt I’ll have much time for simming of any sort after that!

First, I give you Emery Knowles.  He’s got a bit of a smoldering look here that I liked.  The only editing done on this picture was to add a frame.

Emery comes packaged with Tamo’s athletic wear Leisure Shirt and a couple of patterns.

Next, we have Anna Moreau.  In my game, Anna is a famous actress (well, she will be, once I actually have a chance to play Late Night).  I used Anna as one of my model’s in my winning SIFF Photo Reporting Fall 2010 gallery.  I enjoyed photographing Anna with the new city of Bridgeport as her background.  The only editing done to the photo was to add a frame.

Next, I bring you Annette Johnson.  In CAS, she conjured up images of the stereotypical 50′s housewife to me, so I decided to go ahead and have fun with that theme.  While she’s no knockout beauty, I think she’s really cute.  I used an in-game painting for the background in her headshot.  The only editing done was to add a frame to the image.

Annette comes packaged with a Hollister Top by Modern_Sims and Crystal Embellished Nails by NataliS.  Her hair is by Rose; it is not included but may be found here.

Our final male this time is Sean Graham.  Sean is my Ken doll; almost too perfect, but you can always rough him up a bit by adding facial hair or maybe changing a few of his features.  I again enjoyed shooting Sean with Bridgeport’s night life as his background.  I may turn him into a vampire in my game – it should give him a bit more edge, and Bridgeport could certainly benefit by having some more attractive vampires!  The only editing done on Sean’s picture was to add a frame.

Sean does not come with any custom content other than a pattern.

Next among the ladies, I give you Mia Miller.  I think Mia would make an excellent model for Sims 3 modeling contests, not that I’m likely to have the time to participate in another one.  My lighting was a bit weak in this headshot, so I did add highlights via editing and also added a frame.

For the furnished version, it’s also important to note that I used the Frontier Finds store set and the Fraud Log in the home.  I also used objects from all three expansions.  For the unfurnished version, you should at least have Late Night, if you want the jacuzzi.

My first task was to complete the smaller family home I was working on.  I’ve named it Cherry Corner.  It’s a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home on a 30×30 lot with a fun, modern vibe.  It was based on houseplan DD2109-R.  I spent a good deal of time on the interior design of this one; I wanted it to be colorful and playful.  Take a look at the screen shots below, and if you’re interested, feel free to download either the furnished (includes custom content - see the list at the end of this post) or unfurnished (no custom content except a couple of patterns) version of the home.  FYI, I have used items from the Ambitions and Late Night expansions on the lot, so make sure you have them and are on the latest game update before you download the home.

I put my A-Frame house on the backburner because I read that EA is likely to release a “log cabin” store set sometime this winter.  I think a set like that would be amazing for this house, so I’m waiting to see if they do indeed come out with it.  In the meantime, I’ve been working on another house based on houseplan DD2109-R, which is more of a starter home than I typically would create.  I thought I could get it done relatively quickly while waiting on the A-Frame, but I wound up spending a lot of time on the interior design, experimenting and trying to improve.

Speaking of interior design, Sim Interior Designs is hosting a competition called Design Star that I couldn’t resist entering (I tried!).  It’s reminiscent of HGTV’s Design Star TV show, which I love.  I am way out of my league, and I don’t expect to last long in the competition, but it is a great learning opportunity.  The other people in the competition are nothing short of amazing.  You can follow the competition here. 

My competition, Twinbrook’s Next Top Fashion Designer, is winding down to its finale.  It’s been a great experience to host the competition with the help of JMelo and many esteemed guest judges.  Our contestants have been brilliant, and we can’t wait to see who will win this cycle.  We have a lot of great ideas for the next cycle too!

Finally, I’m working on some Halloween themed sims, and I hope I’ll be able to post them here next week (before Halloween anyway!).  I’ll eventually get to the next chapter of my Sisters series too!  However, Late Night comes out very soon, and I definitely want to take some time to just play it.  There are other non-Sims games I’m eagerly awaiting as well.  There’s no rest for a gamer!

First we have Aria Silver, a CAS genetics experiment.  I believe her “father” was my Damon Silver, which explains her good looks.  For her head shot, I was inspired by a very intricate custom content window I found.  Positioning her in front of it at sunset created a fantastic effect.  The only editing done on this shot was to add a small frame around the image.

Next up, I offer you Mace Townsend.  He’s another CAS genetics experiment.  I like to leave my sims’ ethnicity open to interpretation, but to me, he looks Native American.  I decided to go with a bit of a rocker style for him.  I loved the lavender color of the sunset and the soft lighting I was able to get in his head shot.  The only editing done on the shot was to add the frame.

Mace’s hair does not come with him, but it is by Anubis and can be found here.  Mace is CC free.

Next up, and probably my favorite among the females, is Corey McCroskey.  She’s another genetics experiment, and I almost deleted her and moved on due to the hair and outfit EA initially placed her in.  However, there was just something cute and gamine about her that led me to keep her and see if she was workable.  I’m so glad I did!  She actually gives me a slight Audrey Hepburn vibe, although that may well be because of the Fashion Icon challenge we’ve got running in the TNT competition right now.  No editing again on this shot except to add the frame.

Our second male is Nico Moreni, another CAS genetics experiment.  I think he has a handsome, brooding look, and I like the shades of blue with the sky and ocean in his head shot.  Again, the shot was not edited beyond adding the frame.

Nico’s hair is the Emo Cut from the EA Store.  He comes packaged with:

Last but not least among the girls is a sim I’ve been wanting to upload for a long time.  I’ve just never been satisfied with the headshots I’ve gotten of her.  She’s a CAS genetics experiment, but I’ve had her in my game (as a townie), and she’s such a character that, for me, it’s like she was born in game.  Her name is Elena Garson.  I did edit this shot in order to brighten it up with subtle highlights.

Elena’s hair is not included but is by Peggyzone and is available here on page 23.  She comes packaged with:

And last but by far not least among the males in this group is Rake Bryant.  He too is a CAS experiment, but you could consider him a cousin to Meg Bryant, my Strike-A-Pose model.  I think he’s one of the most attractive male sims I’ve ever created.  I really wanted to play with color in his head shot; I really enjoy how in game lighting can not only affect a sim but also a painting.  I was able to get this one looking like a sunset.  The only editing in this shot was to add a frame.

Rake’s hair is from the High End Loft Stuff pack.  His only custom content is shorts from Lilisims.
